It's just a tool isn't it? Well, it all depends on how you look at it, or better yet, use it. What are exactly the reasons why you use your kettlebell? And, are you utilizing it to your full potential? These are a few questions that I have for the select few who choose to make the kettlebell their tool of choice when it comes to a quick, time-saving, demanding, cardio-thumping, functional training practice. Competitive athletes and regular folks of all ages are reaping its benefits. But to avoid training pitfalls, You must understand the timed-tension of your movement to get anything beneficial out of your efforts.
The basic kettlebell swing is what everyone should learn as the first kettlebell specific drill. Not, biceps curls or front raises. Yeah, you can try using a dumbbell to swing between your legs but dangerous things can happen with that (broken windows, injured pets, mad gym owners). I can also use a butter knife to tighten up some screws around the house, but WHY, when I have a screwdriver for that? Follow me? Safety and Effectiveness of Use are paramount.
It may even be better to call the kettlebell a Weapon. Not just anyone can pick up a weapon and start going crazy with the thing. He or she may likely injure themselves or even unintentionally hurt others if the weapon is not used correctly. Have a philosophy of its usage, a list of base drills to practice and some practical knowledge of how to design a progressive exercise program for yourself and you're on your way.
We've been practically 'giving away' all of this information over the years to those who were willing to come by and partake in an open introduction class. With the kettlebell filling the shelves of commericial fitness retailer's isles, many people and personal trainers alike are buying them up as the latest fitness fad without having the correct understanding of utilizing them. NDS has been filling the education gap since 2007.
