NDS: So, how did you first hear about kettlebells?
"Man, years ago, Joe Rogan. It was actually a podcast that I had heard from him that touted the kettlebell as the best conditioning tool for burning fat and building strength, hands down. He had an interview together with Steve Maxwell, a well-known kettlebell and minimalist training coach who traveled the world teaching holistic movement health practices."
NDS: What drew you to the NDS program?
"I live right down the street from the studio. I remember, it was the summer before I was to get married. Every morning I would walk to the 7-11 right across the street to buy a pack of cigarettes and I would see some people in there moving around at 6am, not exactly martial arts, not really crossfit or a bootcamp thing, they were moving ( I knew it was some kind of workout) but it looked VERY interesting.
At that second I told myself, 'Danny, you really need to get your Shit together' so the next morning I walked across the street and saw that all they had were a bunch of kettlebells on the floor. Hmmm..
At that time, with Joe Rogan and kettlebells fresh in my mind, I knew I just had to get my hands on them to whip my ass back into shape and quickly because I was about to change my whole life. Just after my first two weeks of consistent practice, I could tell there was something different we were doing. I knew this was it, I just had to keep it consistent."
NDS: How long have you practiced at NDS now and what is the most important thing that you have learned?
"Wow, it has got to be over 3 years now on-and-off. I REALLY had no idea how many aspects of my life the NDS program would touch. Knowing what I had learned, I just had to get serious about eating right and exercising. I quit smoking and my wife and I now have a 17mo bouncing baby girl that I am happy to play around with without having to stop and catch a breath or worry about low-back pain the next day.
The program as a whole was an eye-opener for me. You just have to give it time to sink in. Everyone has their time frame, don't think you need to rush to get there. As a professional Software Engineer, I spend a lot of time on my butt in front of a computer for my clients, often only taking a small break throughout the work day to make horrible food choices. Simply, I just ate way too much of the wrong foods (junk) for too long and I knew it. I was pissed at what I had done to myself!
What broke the straw on the camels back was that one day while shopping for some new pants, I was INFURIATED to know that I had worked my way up to the 40+ waist mens (big and tall) section... Somewhere I thought I would NEVER be shopping in my life. I was always active when I was younger, backpacking, week long hikes, kayaking, water rafting, I did it all before. I walked out of that store so fast I couldn't believe it. It clicked something deep inside me. I knew what I already knew I had the knowledge to do.
I needed this for me and for my family. I didn't want to be a diabetic at 31 years of age. I decided to make the RIGHT drastic changes. I Changed what I ate and how much I ate, I exercised consistently. Even when I was away from the NDS program, I already knew what I needed to do. I'd wake up early 3:30am in the morning and find myself practicing for an hour before I started work at 5am. Not to mention, I was already up because of my daughter. I got the work in when I could. And when I did, I put my best effort forward. It was Hard, very HARD. I knew it would be (below pics my Heaviest and me with my baby girl Ros)."
NDS: What would you tell those physically active parents and adults out there that may be struggling with their own Health & Wellness?
"At some point in your life, you have to make a decision to get healthy or just give up, I made the decision to continue to do something. I'm just happy that I took the chance at taking Junior's FREE class at NDS, it really changed the way I view fitness and working out the RIGHT way. It gives me a foundation to always go back to. If I ever get off track, it always guides me back on the right path.
Look! Don't ever be afraid to make yourself better, the embarrassment is temporary, regret is forever. I have come back to NDS a couple of times over the years. Only to be greeted with the same happiness and encouragement to continue to practice over and over again.
Don't be afraid to come back even if it's been a long time. No matter what, I ALWAYS feel better after an NDS Practice!"
