After everything I have accomplished (and have not accomplished), I am always left pleased with what I have set out to do since the very beginning... to live, love, learn, and repeat. Along the way, when I got a little bit ahead of everyone else, I always saved time to help who I could. It gives my brain that feel-good-feeling; it's human nature. Feeling good about the way you move and your health, feeling good about your loved ones and theirs, and feeling good about the numbers in your bank account. All feel good stuff, right?! I guess it all depends on how you look at it and the timing of their application in each decade of your life. Damn, am I? Am I getting old? Is this the time I ask that proverbial question? There are a LOT more grays showing through my head lately.
We always find it hard to believe, but is this really the truth about the lives that we live? ... For the first half of a person's life, they sacrifice their health and love to make money. Then, during the second half of their life, they give their money back to recuperate their health and the love they may have lost during that time.

First and foremost, I want to DEEPLY Thank everyone that attended the NDS Cancer Awareness event for my wife (Michelle) last week. It was an emotional event with an outpouring of support and love from family, friends, co-workers and NDS students for this wonderful lady who does so much for others. It took us both a week to take it all in. Over 200 people showed their love throughout the night. Our lives have changed forever through everything that has transpired over the years.
Amongst a few other of my students that have gone through their own diagnoses and treatments for cancer, no one but themselves can truly understand the impact our Movement Practice has on literally 'fighting for their own lives' and maintaining their own postural awareness, muscle-tone, physical health, mental health and emotional health during their trying times. Michelle, a highly respected Cardiology Nurse, is no exception.
If pain-free movement and basic strength and conditioning are an essential part of living a normal, healthy physically active life, why don't most seek the basic knowledge to acquire such abilities when they are functionally able (without serious injury or illness)? Why does physical activity need to be attached to a reward, medal, cool profile pic or some kind of 'pat-on-the-back' for a job well done? Shouldn't it already just be a part of the regular humble routine? The goal is doing.
When does regular physical activity become more important? When we acquire acute and chronic injuries and illnesses? Why does it always have to be the last resort for most and the go-to foundation for a only a select few? (Your answer here ______________).
In addition, amongst all the effective western advances in medicine for the treatment of cancers, there has always been one treatment that has been shrouded with the lack of proper education, paranoia, politics, skepticism, and stigma.. Medical Cannabis.
Cannabis dosing (ingested) for the treatment of injury and illness is not new and the scientific studies conducted throughout the years have been leading the way to giving cancer patients like Michelle direct access. GPP Exercise, kettlebells and physical medicine are also 'tried & true' through hundreds of years of practice. They are NATURAL movement methods of recovering from injury and illnesses throughout life (along with proper nutrition).
Michelle is a true healthcare professional and an active leading example of finding INNOVATIONS in movement health and natural medicine to ease her pain, symptoms and discomfort. It is also the clinical me trying to find ways to produce these medicines and modifiable movement programs with the most effectiveness for her. (Picture of Michelle with homemade RSO- a cannabis plant extract, taken to relieve her joint pain, aid her sleep, decrease her nausea, etc.). Again, education is always key.
Don't you ever be scared or too embarrassed to step out of your comfort zone to see what works for you. BUT, you can not just get wet. You must immerse yourself in the teachings and philosophies. You must take the time to learn to FEEL. This goes for alternate methods of medication and exercise that may go against years of false-belief. It will be those that seek the truth for themselves and not for the approval of others that will benefit from the medicine, physical or natural.
NDS students are not scared or embarrassed to educate themselves, for themselves. They are the early adopters of advanced living in the future who are practicing what they need today for tomorrow. Obstacles arrive daily, so go on and be the change you seek for yourself.
Help me, help you. Movement is Medicine.

This one was not easy for me to write...
The Dream Job. A curve ball. A Unexpected change. Hardships. A life challenge. A season or possibly career-ending injury. Infertility disappointments. A serious life illness. A newborn baby. A new life's-work book. Whatever you call them, these 'special events' in our lives affect everyone that feels deeply connected to you. They bring out the best in all people. They bring people together for the betterment of humanity. Two things I love doing here at NDS Kettlebell Athletics.
Special Events in peoples' lives combine resources for the betterment of everyone. Any special event must draw upon the Ultimate Strength from themselves, their families and their compassionate support staff to get through it all.
Having helped a number of patients and students recover and progress from serious injury and illness (cancer, systemic illnesses) in the past has prepared me to be the best physical and emotional support for my wife who was recently diagnosed (Sept. 1st) with an aggressive Breast Cancer (Infiltrating Lobular Carcinoma) at age 39 and will be immediately undergoing 18 weeks of chemotherapy treatment before major surgery for her condition. It all happened so suddenly. I cried knowing we'd have to put every ounce of Strength we have built into beating this. We will.
I ask for all of your prayers, love and support behind Michelle and her fight at this time (including another NDS student C. H. who is close to our hearts and the strong who have won the fight.. K.S., B. A., D. B., D.N.D.) Continue to be strong. We can do this.

Are Physical Education (PE) and Physical Activity (PA) the same thing when it comes to 'working out'? No. Both can provide an increase in conditioning and exploration of human movement. They can also release feel-good hormones (endorphins) throughout our bodies, as well as build strength and improve coordination. There is nothing wrong with Recess. Recess is awesome. Sadly, just moving around, is not enough.
Children who took formal Health & PE classes throughout elementary, middle and high school have carried their Health into their Adulthood, like learning to squat with good form or keeping a regular exercise routine. Throughout the years, PE classes have been cut due to the result of schools "teaching to the test". This leaves adults today paying the high price for themselves (and their children) who see record low levels of quality PE and overall PA.
So what's the big deal? The big deal is that the majority of 'gym-goers' (active parents included) believe it's the physical activity that creates quick results, yes they do. But, more importantly, the physical education is what creates longevity and a sustainable behavioral change to keep exercise a part of life. Physical Education combines the physical motion with the minds. We must not lose sight of that.
"Physical Education is based on a sequence of learning.. [which] also includes health, nutrition, social responsibility, and the value of exercise longevity," according to the NASPE.
In addition, those parents who have brought their love for PE into their adulthood (who expose their children to their PE and PA have a higher percentage of their own kids cultivating the same PE and PA lifestyles.
On the surface, we know that moving is good to keep the body limber and strong. But, just moving is not enough to create the deep-down behavioral and lifestyle changes we know we need, for ourselves and our families. Physical Education is not dead. It is sought.

I can personally attest to this. My mind has forever shifted from lifting weights and 'working out' for aesthetics (young mind), to moving for my physical health and longevity (wise mind). I didn't need to make things harder, I needed to become smarter about how I approached my own physical conditioning.
I get it, we all get old, our bodies will eventually break down as we age, maybe that's already happening, what else is new? You can always change the way you think and approach it all. A better life awaits.
After thousands and thousands of 'hardstyle' kettlebell swings under my own belt, I can truly say that the proper kettlebell swing, when executed with perfection, under the correct load, inside of the correct program is much better than running miles on the pavement or treadmill, swimming endless laps in the pool or lifting my heart out at the gym to impress myself, my friends or find a mate.
Let us be very clear and be very aware, there are other necessary components of learning kettlebells (like basic physical education) that most do not see or are not familiar with. They are essential to the 'building blocks' of the perfect sustainable Movement practice.
I want to deeply thank the entrants who participated in our Inaugural Kettlebell Swing Challenge. I also want to thank everyone who continues to support our cause in the proper Education of the Practical Application of Kettlebells for Foundational Strength and Conditioning. It's because I do this that I can do everything else.
Great Efforts came in the form of movement efficiency and power endurance during each challengers' 5:00 minutes of kettlebell swings. Congrats to the winners of our Inaugural Swing Challenge event hosted by NDS Athletics this past Saturday.
